The
Institute of Cell Biology (ICB) is located in
a modern building, just above the Bioscience library
and flanked by the Institutes of Zoology
and Anatomy. It has strong links in teaching and research with the Faculties
of Medicine and
Veterinary
Medicine.
The research group leaders ensure undergraduate and graduate teaching in Cell Biology, Developmental Biology, Genetics, Microbiology, and Molecular Biology. In the third (specialised studies) and fourth years (diploma, MSc Thesis), specialisations in the areas of Cell Biology and Microbiology/Immunology are offered, with important contributions coming from teachers of the medical and veterinary faculties. In return, the ICB offers courses for students in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Medicine, Pharmaceutics, Veterinary Medicine and other curricula.
We are dedicated to the education of life scientists who are
able to work independently in research, industry or administration,
who have a broad knowledge and understanding of cell and molecular
biology, and who master the most important methods in modern biology.
In addition we stress the ability to co-operate, communicate and
assume responsibilities.
The research at the ICB is tightly coupled to education. A diploma (MSc Thesis) comprises one year of lab work, a PhD thesis 2-4 years. A broad range of organisms, including yeasts (both Schizosaccharomyces pombe and Saccharomyces cerevisiae), the parasitic protozoa Trypanosoma brucei and related species, insects and mammalian cells are being studied. The foci lie in the areas of DNA repair and recombination, meiosis and oogenesis, the control of gene expression, and on molecular mechanisms of host-parasite interactions.
